Looks like there is no end to the fascination for horror-comedy among Kollywood filmmakers. Though the done-to-death genre is considered a safe bet among makers and saleable item among viewers, there have been many excruciatingly made movies in the past, testing the patience of viewers. Nayae Peyae is the latest Tamil film to be made in the genre. Though the makers haven’t included some of the cliches we regularly come across in this genre, which is a big relief, the unusual plot and proceedings do not succeed in engaging us much.
Karna (Dinesh) and his three friends, who earn money by petty theft, decide to go one step further – they plan to kidnap Karina (Aishwarya), who is obsessed with creating bizarre world records, for ransom. They carry out the plan successfully and she is brought to their home. However, little did they know that Karina was a ghost as she had passed away sometime ago. The humour and surprise element fall flat till then, after which the plot takes an unexpected turn where a romantic track is added between Karna and Karina’s spirit. What is supposed to be an emotional track then goes on to be a tiring one, thanks to the outlandish ideas. The climax twist, too, turns out to be uninteresting.
The performances of Aishwarya and Aadukalam Murugadoss help the film to an extent , while Dinesh and others are okay in their respective roles. A plot which had scope for a decent fun outing went on to become a far-fetched one because of monotonous sequences and over-the-top ideas.
